Nathan and Nina Trask had been looking forward to retirement for years, but there always seemed to be something getting in the way. This is supposed to be a relaxing vacation enjoying the peace and beauty of the verdant spring woodlands. But almost from day one they uncover murder, mayhem, the world’s best doughnuts, and a local commerce that lands them quite literally in a heap of trouble. While out walking Chianti, Nina discovers the body of a young woman, which touches off a kidnapping and arson, and introduces Nathan to the local police department, who seem to be more interested in breakfast than in solving crimes. Judge Thetis Clay runs Sorghum County, controls its law enforcement and its main illegal source of revenue, and will do anything to protect his great nephew, who will one day step into his formidable shoes. At first Nathan is all for packing up and heading home, but knowing his wife, he realizes they won’t be leaving until there is at least some semblance of justice for the young woman. Relaxation will have to wait.
